SUN       Jose Pablo Moncayo's Huapango is a short orchestral piece

SUN       has become his most often performed piece. Silvestre
SUN       Revueltas' Sensemaya draws on the mythology of the ancient
SUN       Mayan civilisation and is a symphonic poem infused with
SUN       Latin American colours, but which also reflects the
SUN       composer's interest and understanding of Western European
SUN       music from the first half of the 20th century.

SUN       master, Aaron Copland. His El Salon Mexico came about as a
SUN       result of a visit to Mexico during which he heard popular

SUN       illumination is something human beings have sought. It can
SUN       herald the triumphant dawn of knowledge or ignite the fuse
SUN       of imagination. Sian Thomas and Jamie Glover explore the
SUN       theme of Illumination through poetry and prose from Arthur
SUN       Rimbaud and Jo Shapcott to Margaret Atwood and Dylan
SUN       Thomas with music by the likes of Thomas Ades, Arvo Pärt
SUN       and Nick Cave.

SUN       I wanted to take an impressionistic approach to the
SUN       subject beginning with dawn and the rising sun. As morning
SUN       comes, the world awakens and we begin to contemplate the
SUN       light of love and beauty. Benjamin Britten's Being
SUN       Beauteous is itself a response to Arthur Rimbaud's
SUN       Illuminations - a collection which includes the poem that
SUN       opens the programme: Dawn.
SUN       
SUN       Light is commonly associated with religious knowledge and
SUN       belief which we explore through traditional classical
SUN       music such as John Rutter's Hymn to the Creator of Light
SUN       and more popular gospel music from the 'original soul
SUN       sister', Rosetta Tharpe. But with light comes a
SUN       metaphorical darkness: death, decay and the horror of war
SUN       are brought to light in the poems of Dylan Thomas and Tony
SUN       Harrison.
SUN       
SUN       I chose Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa to close the programme as
SUN       to me it seems to represent the illumination of knowledge:
SUN       the piece takes a phrase and repeats it throughout the
SUN       movement, becoming more elaborate until it builds with a
SUN       crescendo at the end.

SUN       Julian Joseph interviews the Portico Quartet, who are
SUN       comprised of Jack Wylie (soprano saxophone), Milo
SUN       Fitzpatrick (double bass), Nick Mulvey (Hang and
SUN       percussion) and Duncan Bellamy (drums and Hang). Their
SUN       music's inimitable sound comes from the flying
SUN       saucer-shaped Hang, which evokes a type of ethereal
SUN       saxophone. It was Bellamy's chance purchase of the Hang at
SUN       a music festival that inspired these young friends to
SUN       start a band.

SUN       And Belgian pianist Eric Legnini takes Julian through some
SUN       of his writing. Legnini is one of the most talented young
SUN       pianists around, and after spending two years working in
SUN       New York with American pianist Richie Beirach, he is now
SUN       performing and touring Europe with his own group. Legnini
SUN       has played with leading musicians such as John Ruocco and
SUN       Aldo Romano. He used to tour also with world famous Toots
SUN       Thielemans but has now established himself as a standing
SUN       headlining artist.

MON       great poet. The film's title is a reference to a sonnet by
MON       Keats, titled Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou
MON       art, which he wrote while he was with Brawne.

THU       of emperor. Full of spectacle, the opera was composed for
THU       the 1736-37 Covent Garden season and based on an episode
THU       in Byzantine history. It begins with the coronation of
THU       Anastasio by Empress Arianna being interrupted by news of
THU       the advance of the rebel Vitaliano, who is demanding
THU       Arianna's hand. The peasant Giustino is told by the
THU       goddess Fortuna to join the war against the rebel.
THU       Immediately he saves the life of Anastasio's sister
THU       Leocasta who is being chased by a bear - and later he
THU       rescues Arianna herself from a sea-monster.

THU       landscapes eventually led him northwards, to Norway and
THU       Iceland. He disappeared off the coast of Iceland in
THU       September 1942 while on a rescue flight.

FRI       Rome, but the orchestral score remained in the collections
FRI       of the National Library of France for more than a century,
FRI       being neither published nor played.

FRI       modern times at the Ulster Hall in Belfast in August 2009,
