SUN SUN 21:30 Sunday Feature b007g52h (Listen) SUN Desperately Seeking Mozart SUN SUN Mozart is one of the most mythologised composers in musical SUN history, his name one of the biggest brands on the planet. SUN Even while Mozart was still alive, myths formed around him - SUN about his character, his extraordinary prodigiousness and, SUN above all, his early death. But who was the real Mozart? In SUN this Sunday Feature, repeated from 2006, Professor Paul SUN Robertson, leading Mozart specialists, and experts in brain SUN science, try to find out. SUN SUN 22:30 Words and Music b00x0xjc (Listen) SUN Mozart: An Inspiration SUN SUN Mozart’s life and music have inspired and influenced not SUN only a wide variety of composers, but also many writers, SUN from poets and novelists to philosophers. While music and SUN genius are in essence intangible, the writers in this SUN edition of Words & Music pay homage to one of the greatest SUN of Western composers, alongside some of his finest music. SUN SUN The first author is fellow composer Robert Schumann, writing SUN in his regularly published music journal under one of his SUN two contrasting aliases, Eusebius, commenting on Mozart’s SUN greatness. SUN SUN At the other end of this journey is another figure in awe of SUN Mozart’s genius: the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, truly SUN astounded by the music of Don Giovanni in one of his major SUN works Either/Or. SUN SUN Along the way we encounter those inspired both by the music SUN and the man. Oscar Wilde contemplates the Last Judgement in SUN response to both the aural and visual in the Sistine Chapel, SUN and Hardy’s uplifting Lines to a Movement in Mozart’s E flat SUN Symphony is more an evocation of the spirit of the music SUN rather than a quotation of the music itself. Pushkin’s play SUN Mozart and Salieri dwells on the infamous tale of Salieri’s SUN jealousy; Eduard Morike imagines Mozart en route to Prague SUN for the first performance of The Marriage of Figaro whilst SUN also working on his next opera, Don Giovanni; and Stephanie SUN Cowell’s historical novel features the encounters of the SUN young Wolfgang Amadeus with the four sisters of the Weber SUN family, including his eventual wife, Constanze. SUN SUN Scenes of domestic music-making and underlying emotional SUN intensity are created by Goethe in his poem Hermann und SUN Dorothea, by Mary Shelley in her futuristic novel, The Last SUN Man, and by the American Sara Teasdale in her poem A Minuet SUN of Mozart’s. Meanwhile Mozart’s librettist Lorenzo da SUN Ponte, who improbably ended his days as a professor of SUN Italian in New York, writes in his journal of his role in SUN bringing Mozart to greater recognition, with a certain sense SUN of self-importance. SUN SUN Other authors from America feature too, placing Mozart in a SUN contemporary context: Wallace Stevens, writing during the SUN Great Depression, and WH Auden, who couldn’t resist penning SUN a prologue to The Magic Flute whilst making an English SUN version of the libretto for the composer’s bicentenary in 1956. SUN SUN Brought together, these writers from different generations SUN worldwide are all touched by the humanity and above all the SUN incredible genius of Mozart. SUN SUN Producer: Janet Tuppen SUN SUN 23:30 Apollo et Hyacinthus b00x0xjm (Listen) SUN Reflecting today's Wunderkind theme, a performance of SUN Mozart's early opera Apollo et Hyacinthus, K38, written when SUN the composer was just eleven years old.
