SAT Many regarded him as reclusive and remote, bordering on SAT unapproachable. In 1989 Charles Barber, a conducting student SAT (and now the artistic director of City Opera Vancouver), SAT wrote a letter to Kleiber and an unusual thing occurred: the SAT world-renowned conductor replied! Thus began a fifteen year SAT correspondence and friendship by post. Tom Service talks to SAT Barber, who has now written the first English-language SAT biography of Kleiber and finds out how funny, SAT self-deprecating and modest the conductor was in the way he SAT thought of his profession. Barber also repudiates the myths SAT that surround Kleiber’s genius and reflects on his SAT contribution to modern musical performance. It is that idea which I have set out to SUN explore in this edition of Words and Music: haunting can SUN mean a visitation from the supernatural but it can also mean SUN the eerie return of a memory or an episode from the past. We SUN begin somewhere in the middle of these definitions with the SUN ‘Dies irae’ from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique’, a piece SUN which deals with witches’ sabbaths but also with a recurring SUN vision of ideal femininity. Berlioz sought to paint a SUN musical picture of his own romantic infatuation – and that SUN impulse haunts each movement of the piece. Against this SUN menacing musical backdrop we hear perhaps the most famous SUN theatrical response to a ghostly visitation: Hamlet’s SUN avowals of vengeance after his father’s appearance from SUN beyond the grave. In Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Haunter’ and Toni SUN Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ we get a glimpse of the world from the SUN haunter’s perspective – with voices trapped behind an SUN invisible other worldly screen. Debussy’s ‘Syrinx’ provides SUN the ideal counterpoint for ‘The Haunter’’s ethereal SUN presence, hovering unnoticed on the peripheries of the SUN living world. Leontia Flynn’s ‘The Exorcism’ is rooted SUN firmly in the land of the living – with the poet haunted by SUN nothing more ghostly than her past self. An extract from SUN Benjamin Britten’s ‘Death in Venice’ sees the human voice SUN being used to hair-raising effect. Britten’s anti-hero SUN Aschenbach’s sexual obsession with a beautiful young boy has SUN seen him reduced to a wraith-like figure, haunting the SUN labyrinthine streets of Venice in pursuit of his forbidden SUN beloved. We finish with a homage of sorts to the master of SUN hauntings in poetry and prose: Edgar Allen Poe. In SUN Ginsberg’s ‘Haunting Poe’s Baltimore’ we enter the SUN subterranean realm of Poe’s grave, to the ambient strains of SUN Miles Davis. We then finish our journey under the spectral SUN eye of Poe himself, with his poem ‘The Haunted Palace’, SUN where Berlioz again provides the soundtrack for a final SUN twirl around a ghostly ballroom. SUN SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature b01d0w2t (Listen) SUN Swansea's Other Poet SUN SUN The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams presents a SUN portrait of Vernon Watkins, a poet he regards as one of the SUN twentieth century's most brilliant and distinctive - and SUN unjustly neglected voices. SUN SUN At the time of his death in 1967, it's likely Watkins was in SUN line to succeed John Masefield as Poet Laureate. Kathleen SUN Raine believed Watkins to be "the greatest lyric poet of her SUN generation"; T.S. Eliot and Philip Larkin were also SUN admirers. Dylan Thomas was of the opinion that Watkins was SUN "the only poet whose poetry I really like today". Given such SUN appreciation, the reason why Watkins' poetry slipped quietly SUN into the shadows is something of a mystery. SUN SUN It may be due, at least in part, to his association with SUN Dylan Thomas. Two Welsh poets, writing in English, they SUN first met in 1935, soon after the publication of Thomas's SUN first collection of poetry. Generous in spirit, Watkins SUN immediately recognised Thomas's genius and he never deviated SUN from that opinion. They quickly became friends, meeting up SUN regularly at Watkins' home on the Gower cliffs, both SUN absorbed in the craft of writing poetry. It was through SUN Thomas that Watkins became associated with the artists, SUN musicians and writers, among them Alfred Janes and Daniel SUN Jones, who socialised at the Kardomah Café in Swansea. The SUN number of poems Watkins wrote about Thomas leaves no doubt SUN as to the presence Thomas had in his life, but aside from a SUN shared Welsh heritage and a passionate love of language, SUN there are relatively few points of comparison between them. SUN Temperamentally dissimilar, Watkins preferred a regular SUN existence, while Thomas lived life far more precariously. SUN Their working methods too were different. Watkins was to say SUN that while Thomas worked with what he called living language SUN and "moulded" his poems, his own poetry was written "from SUN the ear and for the ear" with an innate sense of musicality. SUN SUN A master craftsman, Watkins devoted a lifetime to poetry, SUN writing in every known form, from free verse to sonnets and SUN ballads. Generally his poems would be the result of long SUN gestation periods, refined and revised frequently over a SUN year or more. At the time of his death he'd already SUN published several volumes of poetry for Faber, the SUN pre-eminent publisher of the period; posthumously that SUN number doubled. He plied his craft daily, working on his SUN poems after a day spent working as a cashier in a bank. In SUN the evening, momentarily leaving behind the demands of a SUN wife and five children, he could be seen walking along the SUN limestone cliffs of South Gower, where he lived, looking for SUN material to ignite his imagination. Despite being a keen SUN observer of the natural world, he never regarded himself as SUN a nature poet, rather he saw himself as a religious and SUN metaphysical poet, always looking behind the surface, SUN towards an inner world, beyond time. As he says in his poem, SUN The Razor Shell, "do not interpret me too soon". SUN SUN The story tells of the events that befall a bright but naive SUN young Bengali when he is unexpectedly given a job behind the SUN reception counter in 'The Shahjahan', Calcutta's finest SUN hotel. He becomes entangled in the rocky romantic life of SUN the manager, Marco Polo, he is caught in the crossfire of a SUN diva of the silver screen and her possessive husband and SUN witnesses the tragedy that befalls the beautiful but SUN vulnerable resident hostess. FRI FRI The Lithuanian-born, Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet and FRI novelist Czeslaw Milosz was arguably the twentieth century's FRI pre-eminent poet-witness. He was to see his home country FRI invaded, witness the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, the FRI destruction of the ghetto, the doomed uprising of the Poles FRI against the Germans, and the Soviet clamp-down in Poland and FRI Lithuania. FRI FRI Milosz saw it as his poetic responsibility to give voice to FRI the dead and to the still-suffering - "What is poetry which FRI does not save / Nations or people?" (from his poem, FRI 'Dedication') FRI FRI But importantly, he saw his task not as an elegist, but as a FRI poet who should keep the dead alive and remind the living of FRI earthly joys. Javier Lizarzaburu, a journalist living FRI in Lima, considers how the shrine at Pariacaca, the mountain FRI home of an important Inca oracle, was suppressed by Jesuits FRI 400 years ago, with the destruction of thousands of images FRI and the exile of its priests. FRI He considers how the mountain, which has two peaks, embodied FRI the duality of the Andean world view, and its centrality to FRI the Inca creation story.
